This happens mostly between 1800 to 2000 RPM with gentle throttle pressure, but occassionally does happen under hard acceleration. I have had a smoke test done (not convinced by it though) and nothing was shown.

I am considering the purchase of a secondhand Jaguar XF or XJ about 3-4 years old, but from reading your various concerns about particulate filters, I am also concerned. My annual mileage is no more than 10,000, made up predominantly of short journeys. The XJ seems to have only diesel engines, which probably means that I should only be looking at the XF. You can check the pressures from the 2 tubes that goto to the DPF sensor, which is located on the front of the Fuse box under the bonnet. If you have less than 10psi on either of the tubes at 3500 rpm then it can be carbon terra cleaned. The tubes/ pipes measure the difference in pressures before and after the DPF. hXmzbW0.
